AIData vizProduct thinking

Chartsmith started with a simple product question: what if people could describe the chart they wanted in plain language and get something useful back without wrestling with a data tool first?

I shaped it as a bridge between messy inputs and clear presentation. The experience needed to accept CSVs, API-fed data, and natural language prompts while still feeling approachable for someone who is not a data specialist.

Challenge

AI makes chart generation feel magical for a moment, but it quickly breaks trust if the flow is opaque. The hard part was not just generating visuals. It was helping users understand what the system interpreted, where the data came from, and how to refine the result.

Approach

I focused on clarity at each step: input, interpretation, chart selection, and refinement. Instead of chasing maximum flexibility, I leaned into a tighter experience that made decisions legible and kept people moving.

Highlights

  • Turned prompt-driven chart creation into a more guided, understandable flow.
  • Balanced automation with enough structure to keep outputs reliable.
  • Designed for quick insight sharing rather than dashboard complexity.

Outcome

Chartsmith feels less like a black-box chart generator and more like a fast collaborator for exploring data, shaping a story, and getting to a clean visual without unnecessary setup.
